Csikszentmihalyi, professor of psychology at the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University, California, has researched creativity and the traits of highly creative people for four decades. He will be on the Iowa State campus from Sept. 10 to Oct. 20 to interact with students and deliver three public lectures. He will speak on "The Creative Person and the Creative Context" at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, in Benton Auditorium in the Scheman Building. He will speak on "The Family’s Role in Fostering Creativity" at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. He will speak on "Creativity in Work and in Leisure" at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. Csikszentmihalyi also is director of the Quality of Life Research Center in Claremont, Calif., and professor emeritus of human development at the University of Chicago, where he chaired the department of psychology. His work on the quality of life explores such areas as behavior in children’s play, the relationship between people and their possessions, and adolescent talent and behavior. Csikszentmihalyi is the author of "Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention" and "Finding Flow: The Psychology of Engagement With Everyday Life." "Csikszentmihalyi’s work on issues of creativity and personal development is pertinent to everyone," said Ann Marie Fiore, associate professor of textiles and clothing and a member of the committee working with Csikszentmihalyi. "We all affect the creativity and development of our students, colleagues and our clients while at work. Then, we go home and we have an impact on the development of our family members." Csikszentmihalyi’s visit is part of the "Strengthening families to become the best" celebration. Established in 1995, the Hilton Chair was endowed by a gift of more than $1.3 million from the estate of Helen LeBaron Hilton, who served as dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences from 1952 to 1975. -30- |
