| 8-22-00 Contacts: Mary Holz-Clause, ISU Extension Value-Added Agriculture, (515) 294-0648 Teddi Barron, News Service, (515) 294-4778 IOWA AG QUALITY INITIATIVE MEETING TO BE HELD AUG. 30 AT ISU AMES, Iowa – The Iowa Agriculture Quality Initiative's second general meeting on quality and supply chain management and the implications for Iowa farmers and agribusinesses will be held Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the Scheman Building, Iowa State. The meeting brings together leaders from Iowa agriculture interested in agriculture quality management systems. The purpose is to share information and experiences, and learn of opportunities to improve quality management and implications for market access and profitability. "The opportunities for farm businesses to access new markets through quality certification and networked supply chains appear to be great," said Mary Holz-Clause, ISU Extension Value-Added Agriculture specialist. "The efficiencies of managed supply chains and networked markets using information technology will be key to Iowa agriculture maintaining competitiveness. At this meeting, we'll look at the constraints to adopting these approaches." Dan Hoy, Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc., Des Moines, will talk about ISO 9000, the seed industry and extended supply chain; Charles Hurburgh, Iowa State, will discuss the ISO Farnhamville Coop project; Tim Sullivan, Farnhamville Coop, Farnhamville, will talk about ISO and its applications; and a panel of specialists from Iowa State's Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS) will discuss managed supply chains. ISO 9000 is a universal quality management system used by manufacturing and many service industries and endorsed by more than 110 countries. ISO stands for the International Organization for Standards, which is based in Geneva, Switzerland. Sponsors for the meeting are Iowa State's College of Agriculture, ISU Extension and CIRAS.
