| 8-15-00 Contacts: Evie Myers, Affirmative Action, (515) 294-7612 Steve Sullivan, News Service, (515) 294-3720 ISU TO SPONSOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN EXHIBIT IN AMES AMES, Iowa -- An exhibit highlighting the history of African Americans in Iowa will travel to Ames this fall. The exhibit will be sponsored by Iowa State University's Breaking Down the Barriers committee. The African American Heritage Foundation of Iowa exhibit is a 16 feet wide by 10 feet high display focusing on such topics as the Underground Railroad in Iowa, Iowa Negro Baseball teams, the Tuskegee Airmen basic training in Iowa and the history of Buxton, Iowa. The exhibit will be at North Grand Mall, Aug. 28-Sept. 10; the Ames Library, Sept. 11-Sept. 30; and ISU Library, Oct. 2-Nov. 3. It is free and open to the public. This exhibit was made possible by a grant from the Roy Carver Trust of Muscatine. The local sponsors are the ISU Office of External Affairs, ISU Affirmative Action Office, Ames Chamber of Commerce, City of Ames, Hach Company, HyVee, Lowes Home Center, 1st National Bank, North Grand Mall, Wells Fargo Bank, Sande and Margo McNabb of Ames, and John and Linda Dasher of Ames. Breaking Down the Barriers is a committee of Iowa State employees and Ames residents and business people. The goal of the committee is to improve the environment for multiculturalism and diversity. -30- |
