Iowa State's showcase of the university and its student organizations will begin with opening ceremonies at noon on Friday, April 14. Opening ceremonies speaker is John Atanasoff II, son of the inventor of the first electronic digital computer and president of Colorado MEDtech, Inc., a provider of medical products and outsourcing services. Atanasoff's father, John Vincent Atanasoff, and graduate assistant Clifford Berry invented the first electronic digital at Iowa State in the early 1940s. An authentic working replica of the Atanasoff-Berry Computer will be on display in Howe Hall during Veishea weekend. Taste of Veishea in ISU's campustown area will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Taste of Veishea features entertainment and food vendors. A diverse mix of entertainment has been scheduled this year, including Latin, Native American, rap and folk music performances. There will be a pancake breakfast on Saturday from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. in a tent south of the campanile. The cost is $4. The Veishea parade will begin winding its way through campus at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. This year's parade marshals are the Cyclone men's and women's basketball teams. The teams won their respective Big 12 championships and competed in the NCAA tournaments. The ISU Cyclone wrestling team, which placed second in the nation, also will be featured in the parade. (The ISU Cyclone gymnastics team, which won the Big 12 championship, won't be able to participate. The team will be making its first NCAA championships appearance in Boise, Idaho.) Veishea 2000 will feature more than 100 open houses sponsored by student clubs and other organizations. Open houses will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year's Stars Over Veishea musical production is "Into the Woods," written by Steve Sondheim and James Lapine. The Tony Award-winning musical is based on fairy tales. Performances will be in Stephens Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $10-$15 for adults, with discounts for students, ISU Alumni Association members and senior citizens. Indoor concert events are scheduled again this year for the Iowa State and Ames communities on Friday and Saturday night. Special ticket policies apply to both events. Policies are available by contacting the Veishea office. Tickets are available at Stephens Auditorium. Comedian D.L. Hughley will perform at "DEW the Rec," which will be in the Lied Recreation/Athletic Facility from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday. Hughley is the star of "The Hughleys," an ABC sitcom, and several HBO comedy specials. The cost of tickets is $5 for students and $8 for non-students. Tickets will be $8 the day of the show. On Saturday, Veishea Center Stage will feature live bands at Hilton Coliseum from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The headlining band "Black Eyed Peas," whose music is described as a combination of hip/hop and R&B with Latin influences. Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for adults. Veishea's traditional cherry pies will be on sale Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until they are gone in room 16 of MacKay Hall. The pies cost $1 each.
