AMES, Iowa--Former United States Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will speak at Iowa State University at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14 in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. Her talk, "Restoring America's Standing in the World," is free and open to the public.
Albright served as secretary of state from 1997 to 2001, the first woman ever to hold the office. Among her achievements were ratification of the Chemical Weapons Convention and progress toward stability in Eastern and Central Europe. Albright also held positions in the National Security Council, on Capitol Hill and as U.S. representative to the United Nations.
Albright was a research professor of international affairs and director of the Women in Foreign Service Program at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. She taught undergraduate and graduate courses in international affairs, U.S. foreign policy, Russian foreign policy, and Central and Eastern European politics, and was responsible for developing and implementing programs designed to enhance women's professional opportunities in international affairs.
