AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University President Gregory Geoffroy has selected Susan Carlson, associate provost for faculty advancement and diversity and professor of English, to serve as interim vice president for academic affairs and provost, effective June 1.
Carlson has been a member of the Iowa State faculty since 1980. She will remain in the interim position until the appointment of a permanent executive vice president and provost, the new title for that position.
Current Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Benjamin Allen will leave Iowa State at the end of this month to become the next president of the University of Northern Iowa.
Geoffroy also has appointed an 18-member committee to conduct the search for ISU's executive vice president and provost. Tahira Hira, assistant to the president for external relations and executive administration, and professor of consumer economics, will chair that committee. Search committee members include:

- Cheryl Achterberg, dean, College of Human Sciences
- Gregory Palermo, professor and associate chair for undergraduate programs, architecture, College of Design
- James Roth, Clarence Hartley Covault Distinguished Professor in Veterinary Medicine and director of the Center for Food Security and Public Health
- Susan Vega-Garcia, associate professor, Parks Library
- James Bernard, Anson Marston Distinguished Professor of Engineering, mechanical engineering
- Surya Mallapragada, associate professor of chemical and biological engineering and an associate scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory
- David Inyang, director of Environmental Health and Safety
- Ron Cox, director of the Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS)
- Dawn Bratsch-Prince, professor of Spanish and department chair, world languages and cultures, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
- Gary Wells, Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences (psychology)
- Mark Gordon, Distinguished Professor of chemistry and director of the Applied Mathematics and Computational Sciences division of Ames Lab
- Levon Esters, assistant professor, agricultural education and studies, College of Agriculture
- Max Rothschild, Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in Agriculture

Geoffroy said the goal is to name a new executive vice president and provost before Thanksgiving.
