Committee begins search for new athletics director

AMES, Iowa -- The committee appointed last week to conduct a nationwide search for a new Iowa State University athletics director began its work on Monday. The five-member committee and Iowa State President Gregory Geoffroy met in Ames with representatives of the executive search consulting firm, Baker-Parker.

The committee discussed the search process and timeline with Dan Parker of Baker-Parker, who expects the search to conclude within two months.

The committee already is receiving nominations, according to Ben Allen, vice president for academic affairs and provost, and chair of the search committee. Allen said the search committee welcomes all nominations and applications for the athletics director position.

Materials should be sent to: Athletics Director Search Committee, Office of the President, 1750 Beardshear Hall, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa 50011; or e-mailed to adsearch@iastate.edu. The search committee will meet with athletics department staff and various campus groups to get input on the qualities sought in an athletics director.

"We're seeking an accomplished leader who can build strong support for Iowa State athletics," said President Geoffroy. "The success of our program and its strong reputation are making this an attractive position for top-quality candidates."

Baker-Parker, based in Atlanta, has successfully recruited individuals for several NCAA leadership positions, including the president and senior vice president for membership and governance. In addition, Baker-Parker has completed assignments for athletics director positions at a number of universities, including: The Ohio State University, Arizona State University, the University of Georgia and the University of Washington.

Bruce Van De Velde, athletics director since November 15, 2000, announced Aug. 8 that he is resigning, effective at the end of the year. He continues to serve as athletics director until a successor is named, or until Dec. 31, 2005.
