AMES, Iowa – Iowa State University comes in at No. 51 among the top public national universities in U.S. News & World Report’s 2017 “Best Colleges” rankings, out today. That places Iowa State among the top 27 percent of 189 public universities ranked.
Iowa State is in a five-way tie with the University of Missouri, Columbia; the University of Nebraska – Lincoln; the University of Oklahoma, Norman; and the University of Utah, Salt Lake City. Iowa State is in a seven-way tie for 111th overall in the “Best National Universities” category, which includes 310 American universities offering a broad range of undergraduate majors, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees. Last year, Iowa State was ranked 52nd among public universities and was tied for 108th overall.
ISU agricultural and biosystems engineering program ranked country’s best
In biological/agricultural engineering, Iowa State is the No. 1 ranked program among all national universities, and 1st among public universities, a tie with Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. Iowa State was ranked No. 2 last year.
In civil engineering, Iowa State is tied for 16th, or 12th among public universities.
In mechanical engineering, Iowa State is tied for 16th, or 9th among public universities.
Among public universities’ engineering schools whose highest degree is a doctorate, ISU’s College of Engineering is tied for 22nd place. Among all national universities, Iowa State’s engineering program ranks 37th (a seven-way tie with Arizona State University – Tempe; Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio; the University of Florida, Gainesville; University of Notre Dame, Indiana; Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee; and Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut). Last year, Iowa State was tied for 21st among public programs and in a five-way tie for 36th overall.
Iowa State’s College of Business is tied for 48th among public institutions, and in a 17-way tie for 77th overall among AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business)-accredited programs.
Supply chain management/logistics is ranked 18th, or 14th among public universities.
Iowa State is again listed among national universities identified as “A-Plus Schools for B Students,” described as those schools “where non-superstars have a decent shot at being accepted and thriving – where spirit and hard work could make all the difference in admissions offices.” All of Iowa’s public universities are included in this list.
In addition, Iowa State is again included (in a 24-way tie at No. 117) in U.S. News’ top 100 rankings by high school counselors. ISU also is ranked No. 73 (a five-way tie) among Best Colleges for Veterans.
